This is a very common question amongst both men and women. Some people choose to leave it as is, some people choose to just trim it back a bit or into a particular style, while others go the whole way and get rid of everything!
Pubic hair does actually serve a purpose – it protects the vagina from dirt and other potential irritants that may find their way down there. Although in today’s hygienic world this is less of an issue than it once was so this shouldn’t put you off if trimming your pubic hair is what you’d like to do.
There are many reasons why you might like to trim your pubic hair – Aesthetics, comfort, preference of an intimate partner, or other personal reasons.
Ultimately whether you choose to trim or not is a personal choice. It’s not necessary, nor is it any more hygienic or sanitary than letting it grow.
Some women prefer to shave rather than trim. There’s an excellent guide on how to shave pubic hair, written by Sarah from Sex Toys OMG! which guides you through getting the smoothest shave and offers a few handy tips.
If you decide that trimming pubic hair is the thing for you then read on through my guide that will help you do it properly and safely, avoiding some of the common mistakes and pitfalls often associated with trimming down there…
This is probably the most important step and decision you’ll make after choosing to trim your pubic hair. The pubic trimmer you choose will make the difference between a neatly trimmed bush and a messy jungle of hair. In all cases it’s better to go for quality rather than value – If you choose to go the value route you’ll end up paying more for it in irritation, soreness, nicks and bumps, so make sure you choose a good quality pubic trimmer.
I’ve tried a few, but my favorite and the one I’m currently using is Jenna’s Hot Trimmer. It’s rechargeable so you can use it without the hassle of a mains outlet and it comes with 2 interchangeable heads – one for trimming down long hair and the other for doing around the edges to get a smooth finish. Mine also came with 10 ‘bikini designs’ too which are re-usable and surprisingly good.
You can use a pair of standard hair trimmers or scissors and comb, but as said before you probably won’t get the neatly trimmed finish you’re after so it’s best to spend a little money on the real deal here.
There are many different pubic hair styles to choose from when trimming, far too many to go through every one of them here. But here’s a few of the more popular one’s, most of which I’ve tried at some point in the past.
Trimmed NaturalThe ‘trimmed natural’ is exactly what it sounds like. You keep the natural shape and style of your pubic hair, just trimming the length down to tidy everything up. Some women may tidy up around the edges a little, but this is more like the ‘bikini line’ trim. |
Bikini LineSimilar to the ‘natural trimmed’, the ‘bikini line’ trims the length of all of your pubic hair down but then goes further to trim around the edges so when you’re on the beach sporting your hot new bikini there’s no rogue hairs poking out through the sides! |
TriangleThe ‘triangle’ trim is where you remove all of your pubic hair, leaving only a small trimmed triangle patch of hair just above the vulva. This is my favorite pubic hair style and what I’m wearing right now! |
Brazilian / Landing StripThe ‘brazilian’ is probably the most famous pubic hair style there is! This is where you remove all but a ver thin strip of hair down the centre. Rumoured to have come about because of the skimpy brazilian bikini. The ‘landing strip’ is similar to the ‘brazilian’ in that it’s a slightly wider strip of hair that’s left. |
HollywoodThis is the most extreme form of trimming pubic hair there is – All gone! It takes a brave woman to try this for her first time trimming pubic hair but if you’re looking to get some oral action down there from your partner this a popular style amongst guys – My boyfriend loves it when I get a ‘Hollywood’! |
ValentineI chose the ‘valentine’ as just one example of the ‘design’ style of trimming. Essentially you can choose any shape you like to trim in, some popular choices include a star, lightening bolt, arrow, tear drop, an X or a love heart. The pubic trimmer I recommended in Step 1 comes with 10 different re-usable designs you can use too. |
Now on to the fun part – Trimming your pubic hair!
Ideally to make sure that your pubic hair will cut easily it’s advisable to soak in a warm bath or shower for 5-10 minutes first then thoroughly dry your pubic region. This softens up the hair folicles and skin which will make for a much smoother trim and helps to ‘bush out’ your pubic hair more so you can better see how much you’re trimming off.
Next you will want to position yourself somewhere comfortably. I find that the best position is to be sat in a comfortable chair with my feet up above my waist and my legs spread wide apart. Other women I know prefer other positions like with one leg propped up and the other on the floor, or even squatting down. Take a few minutes to experiment and find the position that’s most comfortable for you and remember you can use a mirror if necessary so you can see what you’re doing when it comes to trimming.
If your hair is really long you may want to trim it down to a more manageable length using scissors and a comb before taking the trimmer to it.
Depending on what pubic hair style you’re trimming to you’ll need to decide how long you want the hair to be. Then you can trim all of your pubic hair down to that length. Remember that it’s easier to trim off the length before shaping.
Once your pubic hair is at the desired length you can begin with trimming it to shape. This is simply a matter of taking the trimmers and going around the edges in the desired fashion. For a brazilian remove all the hair, leaving only a very thin strip down the middle.
After trimming you’ll want to get in the bath and thoroughly clean your pubic area using a high quality body scrub such as Summers Eve Feminine Wash, which will wash away any bacteria from the area along with any excess pubic hair and dead skin cells.
…that was easy wasn’t it!
Immediately after trimming pubic hair and washing you will want to apply an aftershave or moisturizer of some sort. Remember it should be alcohol and perfume free, I’ve used one with alcohol in before and I can tell you now that it wasn’t a nice experience!
I have friends that swear by Coochy After Shave Protection Mist but my preference, particularly when trimming rather than shaving, is for Coochy Protection Powder. Applying one of these immediately after trimming will help to reduce itching, irritation, chafing and will leave a protective barrier on your skin.
Daily use can also help to reduce the discomfort caused by stubble between trimming.
